On 28 May 1937, the German government founded an automobile company known as Gesellschaft zur Vorbereitung des Deutschen Volkswagens mbH. Later that year it was renamed Volkswagenwerk, or “The People’s Car Company.” The first vehicle off of the production line was designed by Austrian automotive engineer Ferdinand Porsche and was called the Kraft-durch-Freude-Wagen or KdF wagen, which meant Strength-Through-Joy car. This was meant as a fast and affordable vehicle for the German people.
Unfortunately WWII broke out in 1939 and production of the vehicle stopped until after the war. In 1959 the vehicle was renamed the Volkswagen “Beetle” by American advertising agency Doyle Dane Bernbach. Only twelve years later 15 million of these vehicles sold, surpassing the world record of Ford Motor Company’s model T.
From these beginnings, Volkswagen grew into a major player in the European car market and today it continues to boasts an array of models such as Golf, Passat, Polo, Tiguan and their GTI speedsters.
