Catalytic Converter Service

The catalytic converter has been around for a long time. Their inventor, Eugen Houdry, was a French immigrant mechanical engineer. He first developed them for large smoke stacks, then forklifts, and finally for gas cars in the late 1950s. However, wide-spread installations of catalytic converters did not occur until the 1970s in the US, and much later in the rest of the world.

A problem with your catalytic converter will have some obvious tell-tale signs, so here is what to look out for.

What to Look Out For

  • Check Engine light is on – the oxygen sensors in your car will pick up an issue with the catalytic converter. This will also cause a failed emissions test.
  • Strange exhaust smell – a failing catalytic convert will fail to convert unburnt fuel, which would result in sulfur (bad eggs) smell.
  • Lack of power – sometime the catalytic converter will become clogged up when failing, resulting in weaker power.
  • Rattling noise – if the catalytic converter is damaged, it will cause noticeable rattling when the engine is running.
