The spark plug provides the spark that starts your engine and ignites the air/fuel mixture in your engine cylinder. Every cylinder needs a spark plug, so if you have a 6-cylinder engine, you have six spark plugs. Routine maintenance should be conducted to make sure that your spark plugs last as long as possible. However, spark plugs have been known to fail. In that case, you would need a spark plug replacement.
What to Look Out For
- The car is taking longer to start – this is the most common symptom of failing spark plugs.
- Check Engine light is on – a failing spark plug causes the engine to misfire which causes the check engine light to turn on.
- Your car is vibrating – engine misfiring can cause the car to vibrate. The vibration is caused by the engine being off-balance since one of the cylinders is not firing correctly due to the failing spark plug.
- Delay in acceleration – if you step on the gas and there is a delay in accelerating, then this could be caused by your spark plugs.
