Good Brakes Save Lives in Dallas and Houston

First and foremost, your brakes are your primary way of achieving a safe road trip – Both for you and for those around you. You need to be able to ‘stop on a dime’ in an emergency and you also want to be able to glide to a casual stop without making a racket in the process.

Regular preventative maintenance is the key to this and with European vehicles, the schedule might be a little different. Don’t worry, though – At European Service Center, we know the exact requirements for your make and model and we’ll make sure they’re met!

Signs and Symptoms That Your Brakes Might Need Servicing in Dallas and Houston

So, how do you know if your brakes might be due for replacement? We’re glad that you asked! Below are some of the most common signs and symptoms that those pads are getting thin or the rotors are getting worn:

  • Brake-pedal or steering wheel vibrations – If your brake pedal is vibrating on stops, often along with your steering wheel, then it’s time to get them serviced. This is often a sign of wear and tear that is beginning to become advanced, so it’s best to get things checked out before it can get worse.
  • Slower stops than usual – European vehicles are most often known for their precision and so you tend to notice when your control is anything less than absolute. If your vehicle seems to be stopping more slowly than usual, check for fluid leakage – typically amber, red, green, or blue – as it might be leaking brake fluid and compromising your brake’s efficiency. Alternatively, this can happen if you have a habit of ‘riding the brakes’ so that you slow down a little but never actually stop. In that case, you’re dealing with extra friction and the brake pads are starting to get worn.
  • Whining or Screeching – If you hear a high-pitched squeaking or squealing that’s actually normal – Your brake pads are designed to get a little noisy when they’re thinning out as some extra confirmation that it’s time to get the pads replaced. If the pads happen to be brand new, then this could mean that excessive braking has caused the rotors to glaze from the heat involved in these actions and that will definitely warrant a closer look by an expert.
  • Grinding – If you don’t listen to that squealing and screeching, then you might hear a much worse sound – loud, cringeworthy grinding. When this happens, your brakes are basically shot, and you’re hearing a metal plate that is now grinding against your rotors! At this point, it’s not safe to drive – You should get your vehicle towed into the shop immediately.

European Service Center Brake FAQs

How often do brakes need to be replaced?

It depends on the brakes and your driving habits, but in general you can expect 3 to 6 years of use before they need to be replaced. In miles, that’s about 25,000 to 60,000. If your braking performance is not upto the mark, then you need to get them inspected for replacement & our garages in Alpharetta, Atlanta Piedmont, Atlanta Roswell, Duluth, Dallas Cedar Springs, Dallas Tracy St, Houston, Plano/North Dallas would be happy to help you out. That said, if you want to get technical about it, then light highway driving with little or no traffic is the least taxing, while local neighborhood drives can often be quite a bit more.

The best overall option is to simply stick to regular preventative maintenance and a mechanic who knows you and your vehicle – that way the replacement frequency is tailored specifically to you and your make and model of vehicle!

How long do rotors usually last?

In general, brake rotors are designed to last for anywhere between 30,000 to 70,000 miles. If you don’t use your vehicle often, then it might be a lot more, and if you drive all the time then it could be a little less. Timewise that mileage breaks down to 3 to 7 years.

What are best practices when braking?

A few quick tips to keep in mind regarding braking are as follows. First, try to avoid braking sharply unless you have to or if you are traveling in a straight line. Next, always brake gently and early when you can.

Finally, stay aware of what kind of surface you are driving on – brakes react quite differently on gravel versus the highway and in other surface scenarios.
