Mercedes GL and GLS Repair and Service in Atlanta, Dallas, and Houston

3-year/36,000-mile nationwide limited warranty

If you own the big three-row Mercedes SUV, the badge on the back depends on when you bought it. Through 2016 it was the GL — GL450 and GL550 in this market. From 2017 the same vehicle became the GLS. Nothing fundamental changed with the name. Neither did the list of things that wear out on a 5,500-pound SUV riding on air suspension. European Service Center has worked on Mercedes since 1979 — nine shops, five around Atlanta and four across Dallas and Houston.

The Name Changed in 2017, the Vehicle Didn't

GL450 and GL550 ran through the 2016 model year; the 2017 cars arrived badged GLS. Same three rows, same platform lineage, same Airmatic suspension underneath.

Which matters when you’re ordering parts. A 2015 GL550 and a 2018 GLS550 have a great deal in common, and a shop that treats them as unrelated vehicles is making the job harder than it needs to be.

Airmatic Is the Defining Repair on This Vehicle

Air suspension on a heavy three-row SUV works hard, and it fails through a slow leak rather than a sudden break. A strut develops a pinhole, the compressor runs longer and longer to compensate for a leak nobody has noticed, and eventually one corner sits low overnight. That’s your notice.

Deal with the leak and the compressor usually survives. Let it run and you buy both. On a vehicle this size that’s a genuinely unpleasant number, so listen for the pump cycling while it’s parked.

Weight Is Hard on Brakes and Tires

Stopping 5,500 pounds repeatedly in Atlanta or Dallas traffic goes through pads faster than owners expect, and heat warps rotors. A shimmy through the wheel under braking is the usual first complaint.

Tires tell you about the suspension too. One front edge wearing through while the rest looks fine points at a bushing or a ball joint, not the tire. Read them monthly.

Oil Leaks and Cooling Follow the Familiar Script

Valve cover gaskets, the oil filter housing and, on the V8 cars, more places for it to start. Heat and age harden the seals. A Southern summer under a big engine cover accelerates it.

Coolant behaves the same way. Housings and lines crack. A level that keeps falling with nothing on the driveway is going somewhere warm.

Transmission Fluid on a Heavy SUV Is Not Optional

A vehicle this size asks more of its automatic than a sedan does, and heat is what degrades the fluid. “Lifetime fill” was a marketing phrase, not an engineering one.

Harsh downshifts, a shudder at light throttle, hesitation pulling away — those are the early tells. Fluid is routine. A valve body isn’t.

Mercedes GL and GLS Service FAQs

Is a GLS the same as a GL?

Effectively yes. Mercedes renamed the big three-row SUV from GL to GLS for the 2017 model year. The GL450 and GL550 became the GLS450 and GLS550.

How often does a GL or GLS need servicing?

Follow the in-car Service A and Service B countdown rather than a flat mileage. A heavy SUV in stop-and-go traffic reaches its intervals sooner than the maximum figures suggest.

Why does my GL sit lower on one corner in the morning?

That’s the classic Airmatic leak — an air strut, a line, or a compressor worn out from covering for one. Early diagnosis is much cheaper than late.

Do brakes really wear faster on these?

Yes. Weight and city traffic are the two hardest things for a brake system, and this vehicle has plenty of both. Book brake work by inspection rather than by the calendar.

Where can I get a GL or GLS serviced near Atlanta?

Any of our five Georgia shops — Alpharetta, Atlanta Piedmont Road, Atlanta Roswell Road, Duluth and Sandy Springs.
