Following the Factory Schedule Is What Protects the Car's Value
Every European manufacturer publishes a service schedule, and a complete record of it is worth real money at resale. Gaps are the first thing a buyer looks for, because an undocumented year could mean the previous owner was diligent and lost the paperwork, or it could mean nothing happened at all, and no buyer ever assumes the generous version.
The schedule isn’t arbitrary either. Intervals exist because a specific fluid, filter or belt has a known service life. Skip one and you don’t remove the cost — you move it.
An Independent Doesn't Void Your Factory Warranty
A manufacturer can’t void your warranty simply because someone other than the dealer performed the maintenance. That protection comes from the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. The work has to meet specification and you have to keep the records. That’s the whole requirement.
Keep every invoice. The paperwork protects you. Not the letterhead.
What the manufacturer can require is that the work meets its own specification — the right oil grade, the right filter, the right torque. That part is not negotiable, and it’s the part a specialist shop is set up to get right anyway.
What a Scheduled Service Actually Covers
Oil and filter, cabin and engine air filters, brake fluid, coolant, spark plugs and a full inspection, arriving at different intervals depending on the car. Not all at once. Modern European cars mostly calculate their own timing rather than working to fixed mileage.
BMW calls it Condition Based Service. Mercedes runs Service A and Service B. Audi and Volkswagen use their own reminder. Whichever badge is on the hood, the car is telling you what it wants, and the useful skill is reading it properly rather than defaulting to a round number someone remembers from a different car.
