    AC and Heating Problems

The Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system in our cars make them comfortable and wondrous machines. Without the HVAC system, driving in the deserts of Nevada or the mountains of Colorado would be intolerable. There would be no cooling system to make a car trip worth it during a heat wave, nor would there be heat to defrost the windshields during a cold front. So, making sure you do not have any AC or heating problems is very important for your comfort while confronting the elements.

What is the HVAC System and How Does It Work?

The HVAC system is comprised of the three subsystems that work together to keep you comfortable and safe while driving your car.

    • Heating –the heating part takes heat from the engine and mixes it with the incoming air.
    • Ventilation—the ventilation part moves and directs the air within the cabin.
    • Air Conditioning (AC) – the AC part cools and dehumidifies the air within the cabin.

    Components of the HVAC System

As long as the three subsystems are working well, you will be comfortable no matter what the weather is like. What if something goes wrong? Well, it can be anything in this complex system. Key components of the HVAC system are:

    • Heater Core
    • Thermostat
    • Blower Fan (Blower Motor)
    • HVAC Controls
    • Condenser
    • Compressor
    • Evaporator (Evaporator Assembly)

Leaks or breaks in the preceding components could cause a loss in heating or cooling functions of the HVAC system. There could also be no airflow at all and even a foul smell. Problems with coolant links (AC Lines) could also be a problem, so make sure to have your car checked when the weather gets irregularly hot or cold before a serious problem occurs.
