Jaguar I-Pace Setting the Pace for Performance SUVs

Jaguar is one of the most recognized car brands in the world. Even though the ownership of the carmaker exchanged many hands, including the Ford Motor Company and now Tata Motors, the Jaguar brand remains stronger than ever.  With the popularity of electric vehicles (EV), such as Teslaand the Chevy Bolt, it’s about time we see a company like Jaguar take a go at the EV market. But Jaguar is not introducing any type of EV. It might be a direct hit against the Tesla Model X, but the Jaguar I-Pace is also an all-electric performance SUV with some amazing specs.

    The Engine

One of the best features of the Jaguar I-Pace is its performance. The car comes with two permanent magnet synchronous electric motors, which generate 394 Horsepower and 512 Lb-Ft of torque sending the performance SUV to 60 Mph in 4.5 seconds. The power is instantaneous, fun to use and best of all: silent.

    Charging and Range

Jaguar claims that the battery can be charged to 80% in 45 minutes when charged at a 100kw charging station. There are plenty of those around, but if you happen to be at a 50Kw charging station, then the charge time increases to 90 minutes, and a normal home charge will take an entire day.  A full charge will get you 240 miles, which is great but around 50 miles less than the Tesla Model X.

    Exterior and Interior

The exterior of the I-Pace is hauntingly similar to the Tesla Model X, but with a much fiercer looking grill. And just like the Jaguar F-Pace, the exterior of the I-Pace is well-designed, aggressive, and sporty.

From the interior, The material used is very luxurious as any other Jaguar. The view from the driver’s side is nice, and it is designed well to help you see everything outside the vehicle. Jaguar even included 360 degrees surround cameras (HSE version).

Of course, being an all-electric vehicle, there is a digital driver’s display. The software updates entirely through an Internet connection without the need to visit the dealer (like Tesla). Also, the main system infotainment screen is not nearly as large as the displays found in Tesla models. Additionally, the screen seems to pick up light reflections which make it hard to see from certain angles. Thankfully, there are many places in the car with roomy storage, but the main glove box is very small. However, there are nice storage spaces on the back seats made explicitly for tablets.

In the back of the car, there is plenty of leg room and head room for tall passengers. There are also many USB and 12V charging stations for people (kids) to stay occupied with their devices. The trunk is huge and has more room than the F-Pace. And if you lay the back seats down, you increase the storage space even more.

    Drivability

The Jaguar I-Pace is quiet and smooth, yet very powerful. There are settings available for engine noise if that suits your taste. The car has an all-wheel-drive (AWD), adaptive dynamics, and adaptive surface response which helps for off-roading. Furthermore, the I-Pace has been tested on different racing tracks and has been optimized for “hard driving.”

The price of the Jaguar I-Pace will be $10,000 less than the Tesla Model-X, but it is not a lesser vehicle. Even though the I-Pace is Jaguar’s first try at an all-electric vehicle, plenty of customers will be thrilled to own one.
