A Land Rover’s suspension struts are particularly susceptible to damage and should be replaced every 50,000-100,000 miles, or sooner if your vehicle starts making knocking sounds, riding less smoothly, or showing uneven tire wear. Several factors can contribute to suspension strut failure, so let’s take a closer look.
Land Rovers contain air suspension struts, which means that air leaks can devastate their suspension systems. Most commonly, these leaks occur when the air lines connecting the struts to the rest of the system become damaged or disconnected.
This can happen for a number of reasons, but no matter the cause of the leak, the result is the same: air from your vehicle’s air compressor cannot reach the suspension struts. As a result, the struts fail.
Unfortunately, if damage to your vehicle’s air lines goes unnoticed, even a small leak can escalate into a much larger problem. Because each Land Rover’s suspension system is electronically controlled, your vehicle’s air compressor can sense when a strut is not receiving enough air. When this happens, the air compressor automatically compensates, working overtime to send more air to the failing strut.
When the strut failure is caused by an air leak, this extra air flows out of the leak, doing nothing to solve the issue. If this continues for long enough, the air compressor can wear out entirely. Not only will this make the suspension issue worse, but it will also increase your repair costs, as the air compressor is an integral part of your vehicle that will be time-consuming to replace.
So, if you suspect your Land Rover’s air lines are leaking, get them inspected by a Land Rover professional as soon as possible.
In addition to the air lines, suspension struts, and air compressor, the air dryer is also a key component of your Land Rover’s suspension system. This important component controls the moisture levels of the air that flows through your vehicle’s compressor. If it malfunctions, moist air can travel unchecked into your vehicle’s suspension struts. This can cause rust and corrosion in the struts, which will eventually lead to serious strut failure.
Perhaps more worryingly, if your Land Rover’s air dryer malfunctions, damp air can infiltrate the electronic system that controls your vehicle’s air compressor. If this happens, the electronic system may short out, severely damaging the compressor.
All in all, a faulty air dryer may not only directly damage your vehicle’s suspension struts, but it might cause harm to its air compressor. Accordingly, your Land Rover’s air dryer should receive regular maintenance.
Land Rovers might be built to go almost anywhere, but that does not make them invincible. Prolonged travel over rough terrain can put more pressure on your vehicle’s suspension struts than they can withstand.
Your vehicle’s struts might be perfectly suited for handling individual dips and bumps, but when a lot of these jolts happen over a short period of time, the struts may lack the durability to respond well to all of them. Additionally, severe jolts can sometimes bend suspension struts, knock them out of place, or even break them entirely. Lastly, driving over rough terrain can contribute to the rusting and air leak problems discussed above.
Frequent travel in damp areas can rust many parts of your vehicle, including the suspension struts, and downed branches or other debris can puncture air lines. Therefore, if you enjoy driving your Land Rover over rocky, wet, or broken ground, you should pay special attention to maintaining your vehicle’s suspension system.
