The Aston Martin: one of the most coveted vehicles across the world. Perceived as the manifestation of class and luxury, the Aston Martin is absolutely worth the time and effort you put into making sure it is functioning in tip-top shape. We want to help you identify any problems that may arise with your vehicle and guide you on how to solve them.

If you are noticing that your vehicle is having trouble starting, is running roughly, having engine misfires, and/or lower gas efficiency, these may be signs that you’ve got a bad coil pack. Since the coil pack typically lasts for the duration of the vehicle’s life, there is no official period in which to get it replaced.

The coil pack is an electric pack of ignition coils that create the spark for each cylinder’s spark plug, allowing your vehicle’s engine to ignite. The coil pack is regulated by the vehicle’s computer and is expected to last up to the entire lifetime of the vehicle. There is no standard maintenance schedule for the coil pack, so knowing when it needs replacement or repair takes some basic observational skills.

How to Identify a Bad Coil Pack

A bad coil pack will ultimately result in the loss of the ability to turn over the engine. Symptoms of its failure will appear almost identical to those of a bad spark plug. Some of the most common symptoms of a bad coil pack include:

  • Engine misfiring
  • Backfiring
  • Decreased fuel efficiency
  • Rough running and/or idling
  • Difficulty starting the engine or the engine will not start at all
  • Difficulty or hesitation when accelerating
  • Loud noises coming from the engine
  • Check engine light is on
  • Engine stalling

Note that the severity of these symptoms will vary depending on the condition of your coil pack. As soon as you notice one or more of the above symptoms, it is advised that you contact a professional as soon as possible to properly diagnose the problem. Several of these symptoms may be indicative of more than just a failure of the coil pack, so it is important that an expert has a look to accurately diagnose the problem.

If your mechanic confirms that the coil pack has failed, as coil packs are only recommended to be replaced “as needed,” this may turn out to be one of those times.

Can a bad coil pack cause white smoke?

A bad coil pack will not be the cause behind white smoke being emitted from your vehicle. This is usually attributed to an oil or coolant leak in the engine. However, problems with the engine coil pack can result in black smoke being expelled from the exhaust. This occurs when the engine backfires, meaning unused fuel that was left in the cylinders gets blown out of the exhaust pipe. This smoke will usually smell strongly of gasoline for this reason.

Should the spark plugs be replaced along with the coil pack?

The spark plugs are essential to your vehicle’s ability to turn on and run properly. They work by creating a spark of electricity which serves as the ignition for the combustion required to start the engine.

It may be a good idea to get your spark plugs looked at when having your Aston Martin’s coil pack replaced, as a faulty spark plug may have been the culprit behind its failure. Worn spark plugs create an excessive amount of stress on the ignition coils and cause them to fail much sooner than expected. If your mechanic confirms that this was indeed the cause, then it will be necessary to replace both the spark plugs and the coil pack.
